Azza Soliman is advocating for a new religious discourse with a special focus on issues pertaining to women’s rights. Through the creation of a multi-sector forum, controversial fatwas on women’s issues are revised and reinterpreted to reflect changes in society’s needs and demands. Through the participation and involvement of women’s citizen organizations (COs) in the forum, women select the various legal, social, and religious issues that they would like revise. Azza is creating new readings and interpretations in Islamic fiqh (jurisprudence) that are compatible with the current social, economic, cultural, and political situation.

In an environment dominated by an emphasis on treatment to the exclusion of prevention, Dr. Mohamed Zaazoue is introducing a cultural shift in attitudes toward health and healthcare. He is creating a first of a kind system to deliver preventative health education directly to Egyptian children and their parents in ways that allow them to take charge of their own health.

Essam Ghoneim is improving children’s health and school performance by implementing a comprehensive model of nutrition education and guidance in nurseries and primary schools in Alexandria. After a very successful pilot program, he hopes to expand his work to schools throughout Egypt to reduce the impact of inadequate nutrition on children.

Samy Gameel is integrating the deaf and hearing impaired into Egyptian society by equipping them with the tools and training necessary to become competitive in the IT sector. Samy works with educators, employers, government ministries, citizen organizations (COs), and others to ensure the deaf and hearing impaired have a range of professional opportunities free of discrimination and prejudice. His work not only changes public perceptions of those with disabilities, but builds the confidence the deaf and hearing impaired have in themselves.

Yousry El Koumy

Yousry is creating a positive shift in the minds of Egyptian children and youth so that they become accepting of and tolerant towards each other. Yousry’s vision is to bring about cultural transformation and social change by engaging youth in promoting tolerance and acceptance of the other and through bridging the gaps between social, religious and ethnic divisions in Egyptian society. Yousry’s tolerance initiative is the first interactive classroom-based model where children and youth use the principles of the Universal Human Rights Declaration, relate them to their daily life, engage their families thus spreading them to the wider community and create local initiatives to put the principles into practice. Yousry’s idea is not only unique in content by using the Universal Human Rights Declaration principles but also unique in the methodology he follows which relies on involving parents, students and the community at large in implementing local initiatives.

Magdy Aziz is promoting gender equality in Egyptian society by teaching children about their rights and empowering them to exercise them. Starting in the city of Minya, he is working through the existing educational system to provide boys and girls alike a venue to express themselves freely while exploring gender-related themes, and helping them develop the skills and confidence to participate equally in school, and eventually community life. His “rights of the child” program includes parents, teachers, and education decision-makers as well, ensuring a cooperative and supportive learning process and laying the groundwork for long-term changes in social attitudes toward women inside and outside school walls.

Amgad is creating and growing a nation-wide citizen based movement that is able to systematically combine a nation-wide fight against blood diseases with the mobilization of blood donors across Egypt.

In an effort to enable people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in Egypt to live fulfilling, productive lives and to combat the pervasive social stigma and alienation that they face, Dr. Sani Youssef is building a movement of, by, and for PLHIV. His organization, Friends of Life, places ownership in the hands of those living with HIV/AIDS, whereby PLHIV take charge of their care and prevention efforts. By putting an unusually public and personal face on HIV/AIDS care, Sani aims to change public attitudes toward people living with HIV, returning them to their families and Egyptian society.
